Ariel Simms (they/she) is the President and CEO of RespectAbility, a nonprofit that fights for equity and advances opportunity for people with disabilities. With a lifelong commitment to advocating for marginalized communities, Simms brings a unique perspective to the table as a queer and multiply disabled leader.
Simms has worked tirelessly to promote inclusion and access in various areas such as healthcare, access to justice, education, employment, and self-determination. Their career started as a mental health counselor in Michigan, where they served people at society’s margins. This experience motivated Simms to pursue a legal education, giving them the tools to inform public policy and advocate for human rights.
In addition to their role with RespectAbility, Simms is a Scholar in Residence with the Philosophy & Religion Department of American University, where Simms teaches Human Rights & Disability and Disability Law & Ethics. Simms also Chairs the Board of Directors for the Disability Rights Bar Association. Simms holds a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School.
