Shabbat Dinner with Neil and Denise Jacobson

Participants enjoyed a warm communal Shabbat experience via Zoom with Neil and Denise Jacobson. These pioneers of the disability rights movement also were among the first voices in Jewish Inclusion, and we at RespectAbility are privileged to have Neil on our board. They welcomed an open discussion on their 50 years of disability rights leadership, including the part of their journey chronicled in the recent masterpiece documentary Crip Camp, now available on Netflix, which we encourage everyone to watch for an introduction to the Jacobsons and to the disability rights movement.

Virtual Gathering: Schmooze with the Jews!

This gathering, done over Zoom and largely unstructured, had one simple goal: for Jews who are socially distancing to be able to connect, relax and share stories on how they are surviving the “new normal.” It was a laid-back way to connect to new people or old friends.

With one-in-five people having a disability in the U.S. today, the lack of representation – just 3.1 percent on screen and even less in children’s television (less than one percent) – means that millions of people are unable to see themselves in media today. RespectAbility has been honored to play a part in changing this, including consulting on an array of films and TV shows, including the Netflix series The Healing Powers of Dude and The Disney Channel’s Bunk’D.
