Accessible Celebrations

a calendar with the accessibility icon and a star replacing several of the squares for events. Text reads Accessible CelebrationsAs we begin the spring season, we recognize several important religious observances happening across different faiths. Embracing and accommodating these events within our faith communities fosters inclusivity and respect for all traditions. It’s essential that we create spaces where everyone, regardless of ability, can fully engage in these celebrations.

Religious Observances That Happened This Month

  • Mahavir Jayanti (Jainism): Celebrated on April 10th, Mahavir Jayanti honors the birth of Lord Mahavira, the founder of Jainism.
  • Vaisakhi (Sikhism and Hinduism): On April 14th, Vaisakhi marks the Sikh New Year and the celebration of the spring harvest.
  • Easter (Christianity): Celebrated on April 20th, Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, a key event in the Christian faith.
  • Passover (Judaism): From April 12th to April 20th, Passover remembers the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. Rabbi Lauren Tuchman’s Passover message offers insightful tips for making Passover celebrations accessible and inclusive for all, including adapting the Seder meal with large-print or braille Haggadahs, providing sensory-friendly experiences, and considering dietary restrictions for those with food allergies or sensitivities.

Event Accessibility Tips

To ensure your services and celebrations are accessible to everyone, consider these inclusive suggestions:

  • Food: Clearly label all ingredients, including allergen information, with large-print signage. When possible, offer a variety of dietary options, including vegetarian, gluten-free, and halal choices, and ensure food stations are accessible to all.
  • Seating: Provide flexible seating options for people who use mobility devices, and avoid isolating them. Keep paths clear and ensure unobstructed views for those in wheelchairs.
  • Transportation: Confirm that event venues are accessible by public transportation and offer accessible carpooling options for those who need assistance. Designate accessible parking spaces near the venue for easy access.
  • Hybrid Options: For in-person events, consider offering virtual attendance options to accommodate those who cannot attend in person. Enable interactive features, such as chat boxes, to ensure everyone can engage.
  • Events at Home: When hosting at home, ensure that pathways are clear for mobility devices, doorways are wide enough for wheelchair access, and there are accessible restroom facilities. Check that there’s enough space for maneuvering and that seating is inclusive and adaptable.
