Julie Schurman

Julie Schurman is a Manager, Policy, at the disability advocacy nonprofit organization Disability Belongs™.

Julie has been a lifelong advocate dedicated to championing the rights of disadvantaged groups and those with disabilities through both legal and policy advocacy. Her career started in the Northern Ireland Assembly, where as a legislative aide, she tackled complex issues around education for people with disabilities.

Her commitment to public policy reform propelled her to serve as a research fellow for the U.S. Library of Congress. There she delved into the intricacies of U.S. healthcare reform.

Julie later served her community in Los Angeles for more than a decade as a public interest attorney, where she tirelessly defended on a wide range of issues, including protecting the rights of those struggling at the crossroads of poverty and disability.

As a Policy Officer for the San Pedro Recovery Alliance, Julie orchestrated policy and legislative reform initiatives and campaigns to enact systemic change targeting poverty and homelessness.

Julie’s personal journey as a legal advocate for her spouse, a Traumatic Brain Injury survivor, deepens her insight into the realm of disability rights. This personal perspective drives her fervent quest to establish a framework of support for individuals with disabilities as a fundamental right, not a privilege.
